Trees growing citrus fruits and other summer crops surround the small South Australia town of Loxton, in the state's Riverland region. This scenic community's Loxton hotels include three small holiday homes, a larger motel and a couple of caravan parks. Visitors can see how high the Murray River rose in past years on the town's Tree of Knowledge. However, none of the community's floods were worse than the one which lasted nine months in 1956. This flood's destruction is vividly displayed in an exhibition at the local historical village, whose more than 45 exhibits and buildings depict the town's pioneer past. Visiting the historical village is most enjoyable of all during its ‘Alive’ days, when locals roam about in 19th century costumes, the blacksmith hammers hot steel and the smell of fresh bread wafts from the bakery. Another historic building called the Pines is surrounded by restored gardens and filled with exquisite antiques. The visitor information centre's little shop is the best place for visitors to purchase unique souvenirs from their stay in this charming Murray River community. Visitors can enjoy seeing the surrounding wetlands and vineyards as well as local wines at Banrock Station Wine and Wetlands Centre.
