Introduction to Lizard Island, Australia

Lizard Island is considered to be one of Australia's top scuba-diving destinations. Located in the far north of Queensland, it is part of the stunning Great Barrier Reef. Travellers can get here by flying to the island's airport from Cairns. This journey takes around one hour, courtesy of Hinterland Aviation. Flying here is the only way to reach the island independently since dive boats which stop here are usually part of organised trips from Cairns. However, it is recommended that visitors stay at one of the exclusive Lizard Island hotels in order to appreciate the unique beauty of the area. Guests can find great snorkelling off the island's beaches, while diving sites are a just a short boat ride away. Visitors can also hike to Cook's Look, named after the world-famous explorer James Cook. He once used this spot to navigate a safe path through the Great Barrier Reef. It takes around two hours to hike to Cook's Look, Lizard Island's highest point. The only restaurants and bars on the island are located in hotels.
