Introduction to Lithgow, Australia
Fast developing as a destination for tourists, Lithgow is a tiny town that was built around the coal industry. The town is ideally situated an hour’s drive inland from Sydney and surrounded by protected wilderness including the stunning Blue Mountains, which can be reached by car in a little more than 15 minutes. Even closer is Newnes State Forest, a huge expanse featuring a number of hiking trails that extend almost to the edge of Sydney. The highlight of the area and the best way to see the scenery without breaking into a sweat remains the iconic Zig Zag Railway, featuring steam locomotives that first operated a century ago. The centre of town features a number of heritage buildings such as the Former Station Master’s Residence and the striking Ironworks Blast Furnace, surrounded by parkland. Many Lithgow hotels are housed within original settlers’ buildings, offering accommodation and a slice of history all in one.
