Introduction to Launceston - Windmill Hill
The Tasmanian city of Launceston lies on a deep inlet at the confluence of three rivers: the Tamar, the North Esk and the South Esk. The second-largest city in the island state, Launceston is becoming a major tourism hub for the northern area of Tasmania. The city's Windmill Hill district lies in East Launceston, south of the city park, with the hill itself located between York Street and High Street, with Adelaide Street running long its southern foot. Close by are several Windmill Hill hotels, together with a few guest houses and motels, with further options set in the narrow divide between the hill and City Park. The hill's green spaces have been used for recreation since the city's founding 200 years ago and are home to a WWII memorial avenue and an aquatic centre, built on the site of an old swimming pool. Opened in 2009, the centre has a selection of indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna and spa, social areas and a cafe as well as a wellness centre equipped with fitness machines. If you're travelling as a family, it's a great place to spend the day.Visit our Launceston Travel Guide
