Introduction to Launceston, Australia
The island of Tasmania is separated from the mainland of southern Australia by the Bass Strait. Launceston, sited at the confluence of the Tamar and Esk rivers, is the biggest city in the north of Tasmania and the main entry point to the island for ferry passengers. The city centre is located on the right bank of the South Esk. There is a diverse choice of Launceston hotels as well as cheap backpacker accommodation in the central area. This district contains several restaurants which serve fish and chips, Thai cuisine and various ethnic delicacies. There are also a few British-style pubs. City Park and the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania are on the north side of the centre and easily accessible on foot. The museum houses one of the globe's most diverse collections of vintage vehicles as well as Rolls-Royces and contemporary muscle cars. The picturesque City Park features colourful gardens, historic Albert Hall and a macaque monkey corral. Cataract Gorge, one kilometre from the centre, is Launceston's iconic landmark. Travellers can ride a 300m chairlift across the gorge. Visit our Launceston Travel Guide
