Introduction to Launceston - City Centre
The Tamar, South Esk, and North Esk rivers all meet at the city of Launceton in northern Tasmania, just a 50-minute journey by plane from Melbourne on Australia's mainland. Only Sydney and Tasmania's capital, Hobart, are older Australian cities than Launceston, whose first European settlers arrived in 1806. Launceston remains the ninth largest Australian city which is not a state capital and its most famous attraction may be the stunning Cataract Gorge, situated just one kilometre from Launceston - City Centre. Another popular Launceston attraction, the Boag's brewery tour, begins at one of the oldest of the many Launceston City Centre hotels. Yet another unique way to explore Launceston occurs during the nightly Launceston Ghost Tour, which takes visitors through many of Launceston's historic buildings and landmarks. One of Launceston's oldest landmarks is its city park, established during the 1820s and nearly as old as Launceston itself. A pond filled with ducks, many colourful gardens, and an enclosure of Japanese macaque monkeys can all be found at Launceston City Park. Other Launceston attractions include the National Motor Museum and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery.Visit our Launceston Travel Guide
