Introduction to Lakefield National Park, Australia
Offering a range of outdoor activities over a huge area that is bigger than some whole countries, expansive Lakefield National Park lies halfway along the Queensland peninsula, three hours’ drive along the coast from Cairns. Its northern end at Princess Charlotte features long expanses of white sandy beaches that border the Great Barrier Reef, an excellent spot for diving. At the southern end, the town of Laura features the biggest exhibition of prehistoric rock art found anywhere in the world. In the park itself, fishing and camping are hugely popular activities, so too is walking although precautions must be taken due to the extreme isolation here. The park is best visited outside of the wet season (December to April) when it closes because the only road in and out usually becomes impassable. Lakefield National Park hotels are concentrated in Laura although with just a few hundred inhabitants, options are limited in this tiny town.
