Officially Australia’s deepest lake at 200 metres, Lake St Clair lies in an area of stunning natural beauty within the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park in the centre of Tasmania. The area is almost devoid of human life and much cooler than elsewhere in Australia, which makes it a unique region for hiking. It features a host of wildlife such as possums and wallabies. Some of the walks take just a few hours, while others require a few days and permits from the park entrance. Visitors spending an extended holiday here can venture a few miles south to Lake King William, which is within easy walking distance across the main A10 road, the only way into Lake St Clair at its southern end.
