Introduction to Kosciuszko National Park, Australia
Home of mainland Australia’s tallest mountain, Kosciuszko National Park offers visitors to the country a rare opportunity for skiing and hiking above the snow line in what is a stunning wilderness area. Mount Kosciusko, at just less than 2,300 metres high, is a relatively straightforward yet satisfying climb along a five-mile long trail, but there is a chairlift for those that want to take a more direct route up. The area also boasts Australia’s highest toilet and highest town, Cabramurra, which lies nearby and is covered in snow during the height of winter, in July. Walking in this area is among the most pleasant walking in the country given the mild alpine climate and ruggedness of the scenery. The area is home to a number of unusual animal species including the mountain pygmy possum and wild horses. Kosciuszko National Park hotels are centred on Perisher Valley and Smiggin Holes, where the views are unsurprisingly spectacular.
