With far more sheep than people, Kempton is a quiet little town in the southeast of Tasmania, about 30 minutes north by car from the state capital of Hobart. This is a scenic area for hiking, surrounded by plains and low hills that get very little rainfall each year. The town makes for a peaceful retreat, given only about 350 people live here despite its location on the main Highway 1. Harry Walker Tier Conservation Area is a good area to explore for those that enjoy the great outdoors and it’s only a few miles southwest of Kempton. Den Hill Forest Reserve is equally close. Many of the buildings here are old colonial style villas given that the town was first settled as early as 1820 by Europeans. There are only a handful of Kempton hotels, all of which lie on Main Street. Tavern accommodation is the norm in the town, which is easily accessed from Hobart.
