Introduction to Kapunda, Australia
Featuring its iconic big Cornish miner, Kapunda is an attractive little town in South Australia, close to a major wine-growing area, the Barossa Valley. Although the eight-metre tall miner, a symbol of the town’s copper mining heritage, was destroyed by fire in 2006, it has since been rebuilt. The mining industry has become a major part of the town’s tourism infrastructure, which includes a museum tracing the 150-year history of the industry here. The Kapunda Celtic Music Festival is the main cultural draw in the town, with a range of live performances held at local pubs and other venues around the middle of October. For the best walks in the vicinity, head up Gundry’s Hill Lookout, which takes in scenic vistas of the town. There is also an 18-hole golf course on the western edge of the centre. Kapunda hotels, most of which lie on the main junction, are numerous in spite of the town’s small size.
