The wildlife-rich Eastern Cove and Pelican Lagoon regions on Kangaroo Island, Australia's third smallest island, are separated by a narrow tidal channel called American River or simply 'the River.' American River hotels are located near the island's most sheltered harbour and boast unforgettable views of both Eastern Cove and mainland South Australia. Much of the local wildlife only emerges after dark, so torches are necessary possessions to bring on any of the organised nightly tours offered here. Visitors may hire boats or fishing charters at the boat ramp before sailing or angling in Eastern Cove's relatively-protected waters. The inner bay and natural fish nursery of Pelican Lagoon is a protected aquatic reserve. Visitors can watch the birds which breed in the lagoon's smaller islands from the Fish Cannery Walking Trail.
