Located at one of the southernmost points on mainland Australia, Johanna is a small seaside town overlooking the Bass Strait and Tasmania. Geelong can be reached in just 30 minutes by car from here, and Melbourne lies just a little further to the northeast. The town makes an ideal base for exploring the scenic Great Ocean Road by car, with superb little coves and views of the ocean. The beach is a beautiful and little visited stretch of sand with good surfing conditions. The Bells Beach Classic surf competition has been held here in recent years when conditions at Bells Beach are too flat. Inland, the rugged coastline features idyllic stretches of greenery that are popular with walkers. Fishing is another major pastime here, particularly on the beach during the early morning and evening. Johanna hotels are lacking in number but there is a selection of excellent cottage-style resorts.
