Introduction to Jindabyne, Australia
Jindabyne, known locally as 'Jindy', is a service town for the nearby Snowy Mountains. The Snowy Mountains is Australia's premier skiing region. Most skiers stay here because Jindabyne hotels are much less expensive than resorts on the slopes, such as Perisher. In any case, there are still plenty of shops here which rent out skiing equipment, as well as other outlets catering to tourists. Perisher is around 20 minutes from the town by car, but the journey can take up to an hour in bad weather. Many guests hire a vehicle, but hitchhiking is also popular for those without wheels. Travellers can get to the town by flying to Canberra and hiring a vehicle there. Canberra is around two-and-a-half hours away. Alternatively, a number of bus firms offer seasonal services to the town. These days, increasing numbers of visitors are travelling here in the summer.
