Famous for its fresh fruit and heavy rainfall, Innisfail has seen something of a makeover following the devastation caused by Cyclone Larry in March 2006. The town lies in a scenic area, close to the Coral Sea estuary, where the Johnstone River splits in two. It is just a few miles from picturesque Moresby Range National Park, which is a prime spot for hiking and taking in views of the coast. Innisfail itself is a town of green spaces and parks, adding to its leisurely feel, although the town comes alive for a number of festivals. The Kulture Karnival and the Innisfail Rodeo are events that mix the best of this culturally diverse town, home to indigenous Australians, East Asians and Italians, among numerous other ethnicities and nationalities. Innisfail hotels tend to be good value compared to accommodation farther north on the popular Cairns coastline. Head to those close to McGowan Drive for the best views of the river right where it splits.
