Introduction to Hobart, Australia
Hobart is an ambient city located on the River Derwent, in the southeast quarter of the Australian island of Tasmania, of which it is the capital. The Bass Strait separates the island from the mainland of southern Australia, with Hobart a primary entry point for air passengers. Although Hobart straddles the Derwent, the central district is on the left bank. It is in this district that many of the Hobart hotels and wining and dining establishments are located. Architecture fans will want to take in the old buildings of Salamanca Market and Battery Point. Pubs and nightlife venues are centred around Sullivan's Cove. The city has an active live music scene and offers genres such as heavy rock and folk. The Falls Festivals held over the New Year period is one of a number of annual events staged in Hobart. The stately Theatre Royal, the Maritime Museum and the Tasmanian Art Gallery are all in the central district. Within a one-kilometre walk, attractions include the Narryna Heritage Museum, the Cascade Brewery and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. Just outside the city are numerous wineries.
