Located about 50 miles off the Queensland coast from Gladstone, Heron Island is a tiny island in the southern section of the Great Barrier Reef. Almost totally flat and surrounded by shallow waters and coral reefs, the island makes an excellent destination for scuba diving and snorkelling given its shipwrecks offshore as well as the huge array of wildlife including different species of sea turtles and humpback whales. As such, the island lies within a protected area. Within the interior are a number of nesting bird species and bright flowering plants that all add to the colourful flora and fauna found here, making it an ideal retreat for nature lovers and children. Catamarans and boats regularly ferry between here and the mainland, bringing in visitors. Heron Island hotels are limited in number due to the small size of the island and the fact it is protected, with resort accommodation the only option.
