Introduction to Gympie, Australia
Set in eastern Queensland, some 165kms from Brisbane along the beautiful Mary River banks, the town of Gympie was founded by cattlemen in the 1840s. It became the site of Queensland’s first gold rush 25 years later. Soon after the original strike, a massive alluvial 975 ounce nugget was panned and the town became an ongoing riot, with great fortunes made and often lost. The rich, fertile valley soil fed the miners and farming soon became the secondary industry, with Gympie now firmly established as one of Australia’s major heritage towns and tourist destinations. Gympie hotels are busy year round and crowded during the annual 10-day Gold Rush festival held in October. During the rest of the year, visitors can delve into the town’s amazing history at the Gold Mining Museum, take the Valley Heritage Railroad through the valley or visit the old panning sites. The Amamoor State Forest is nearby, with its Mother Mountain home to many protected species, rivers, rock pools and lush forests honeycombed with walking trails. other spellings: gynpiehotels, otelin gympei, gymipe hotell, gypmie hote, gmypie hotes, ygmpie hotle
