Introduction to Groote Eylandt, Australia
Groote Eylandt is the biggest island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, located in Australia's Northern Territory. It lies roughly 50kms east of the mainland and has a population of just over 1,500 inhabitants. The island is listed as aboriginal land and due to this, tourism has not been encouraged. Until recently, permission had to be granted to visit Groote Eylandt, although a deal was reached in 2008 where the government will help to develop and improve the community in return for land which can be used for tourism. While there may not be a wide range of Groote Eylandt hotels, there is one resort style hotel as well as a fishing lodge. Fishing is one of the main draws to the island, with sailfish, tuna and giant trevally among the marine life in the area. Also of interest are the impressive aboriginal arts and crafts and rock art sites on display. There is a small airport on the west of the island which provides flights to Darwin, Cairns and Bathurst Island.
