Introduction to Griffith, Australia
The Riverina region of New South Wales has many national parks and areas of outstanding natural beauty, with Griffith city one of its largest and most popular tourism destinations. Settled as a result of the irrigation of the arid Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, the town was designed by architect Walter Burley Griffin, who also designed the country’s capital, Canberra. The most popular attraction in the city is the Pioneer Park Museum, an outdoor 11 hectare display of 40 original heritage buildings from the early days of Australian colonisation. Surrounding the city are many wineries and agricultural districts. Many guests staying in Griffith hotels plan to visit nearby Cocoparra National Park, just 25kms to the north and famous for its colourful carpets of spring wildflowers. Many tree species are represented here, including the famous tea tree, the source of the planet’s most powerful natural antiseptic. Ladysmith Glen, a deep, narrow gorge, was delved from the living rock by Jack’s Creek, and is home to peregrine falcons, eagles and other birds of prey - a delight for visiting birders.
