Located 17 miles off the coast of Cairns, in Queensland and within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park World Heritage Area, Green Island is a hugely popular destination, particularly among day-trippers exploring the coast. Surrounded by coral reefs, the island is one of many excellent spots for snorkelling and scuba diving within the barrier reef. With its white sandy beach and clear azure waters, it makes a popular, relaxing retreat away from the more crowded mainland coast. The interior is made up of thick rainforest, parts of which can be explored on foot although most visitors here stay on the periphery of the island to enjoy the sea. Access to the island is by boat, sea plane or helicopter from Cairns, the main gateway, or other towns close by. Due to the island's tiny size, Green Island hotels are limited to the single resort on the island, which offers a range of facilities.
