In the southeast of Queensland, just over one hour's drive from Brisbane, Grandchester is a small town with a big history.

Train buffs will note that the town is home to the world's first narrow gauge mainline railway, which dates back to 1865, while it is still possible to visit the original station that marked the end of the line from Ipswich.

It was also the home of the last-known flat-belt sawmills in the country until a fire destroyed the structure in 2007, but restoration work means the site is set to open to the public again soon.

Just outside of Grandchester is Main Range National Park, which falls under the protection of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Gondwana Rainforests, a stunning area of mountains, lakes and rainforests with numerous walking trails.

Grandchester hotels are few and far between due to the small stature of the town, with a handful of choices on Rosewood-Laidley Road.
