Introduction to Gladstone - City Centre
The Queensland industrial town of Gladstone lies on the coast between Rockhampton and Bundaberg, with its airport just five kilometres from the city centre. Heavy industrial landscapes are the norm here, with Gladstone City Centre hotels catering more for business travellers than for any other type of visitor. Even so, the city holds a number of botanic gardens, and its marina area is pretty. Gladstone Harbour itself is the largest natural harbour on the continent, and the grubby town is surrounded by outstanding natural beauty. Visitor facilities and especially restaurants in the city centre are expensive by Australian standards, although a few historic buildings enliven the cityscape in this area. Downtown Goondoon Street is the main shopping, entertainment and leisure strip, although the area isn't exactly known for its cultural events or lively nightlife. One advantage the city does have is its easy access to pretty nearby islands with great beaches, and to nearby Lake Awoonga with its water sports and wildlife.
