Introduction to Fremantle - City Centre
No other 19th century port streetscape on earth is better preserved than Fremantle, Australia. Although this city is technically a district of Perth, 19kms away, most residents would agree it is most definitely a separate city with its own unique identity and attractions. Many of the city's beautifully preserved 19th century buildings were constructed by convicts, and many of these buildings now house Fremantle City Centre hotels. The same is true for the local arts centre, an imposing 1860s Victorian Gothic building whose courtyards now host concerts, art exhibits, and other live entertainment. The city's South Terrace section is now known as the 'Cappuccino Strip' because of its several sidewalk cafes, while this port city's nautical history is proudly depicted at the Western Australia Maritime Museum. The many beaches throughout the city include the flat Bathers Beach and the busy South Beach, but the Swan River's Blackwall beach is the preferred local canoeing spot. The 1830s Round House, originally constructed as a prison, may be the first permanent building ever in Western Australia; but it was the 1850 Fremantle Prison which became the state's biggest maximum security prison. other spellings: freemantle hote city, fermantel center hotell, fremantlehotel city, fremantel otel
