Queensland's largest island on the eastern coast of Australia, close to the Sunshine Coast, is also the largest sand island in the world. As such, Fraser Island is a designated UNESCO World Heritage site. With its immaculate white sandy beaches and clear seas, the island has steadily seen its popularity increase in recent years. Lake McKenzie, one of more than 100 lakes here, offers a picture postcard beach and transparent waters. Fishing is a popular pastime among visitors to the island given the wealth of species off the coast, and in the interior trekking is a favourite activity. A well-maintained, 55-mile trail runs around the island, but the quickest way to get around is by four-wheel drive. Such vehicles are readily available on the mainland, with the driving on sand an exciting challenge for most drivers. Getting to the island is straightforward due to its proximity to the mainland, with car ferry services available. Fraser Island hotels are carefully placed in designated areas on this sandy landmass, while many visitors here use the camp sites.
