Introduction to Falls Creek, Australia
Australia’s Victoria State isn’t just for warm weather holidaymakers – the state’s Alpine National Park is home to many ski resorts set in stunning mountainous scenery. One such resort, Falls Creek, is a ski-in, ski-out resort overlooked by Mount McKay. It is around 30kms from the nearest town, Mount Beauty. Snowcats and lifts take skiers up the mountain to its snowfields, set at 1,842m, and the state’s highest peak, Mount Bogong, is nearby. The high plains here were once used to graze cattle in the summer, with the now unused cattlemens’ huts fascinating tourist attractions. Falls Creek hotels are of traditional Alpine design, and the fickle snow conditions are regularly enhanced by snow-making machines using water from a nearby lake. The slopes have open views and wide, rolling runs, with short queues and uncrowded on-piste conditions. The village holds numerous restaurants, bars and apres-ski joints operating on an open-all-hours basis. Outside the ski season, it serves as a summer base for outdoor enthusiasts exploring the national park surrounding the resort area.
