For vistas of dramatic coastal scenery and glimpses of Tasmanian history and diverse indigenous wildlife, visitors will do no better than spend a few days exploring Eaglehawk Neck, an isthmus forming a gateway to the Tasman peninsular that is home of Port Arthur. Unusual geological formations and rugged terrain characterise this spectacular region, with one of the strangest the Tessellated Pavement, formed by erosion over aeons but seeming manmade. Other rocky glories are the Blowhole, Tasman’s Arch and the Devil’s Kitchen. Eaglehawk Neck hotels draw visitors with the surrounding stunning scenery, the isthmus’ white sand beaches and rearing sea cliffs. But the main attraction is a number of spectacular dive sites, including shipwrecks and submerged kelp forests. Rock-climbing and kayaking on and around the amazing geological formations is a favourite here, and a cruise along Pirates’ Bay reveals dramatic coastlines, penguins, seals and dolphins. Underwater caves and crevasses provide more dive sites, and the waters here are virtually transparent. For walkers and hikers, nearby Tasman National Park offers great bushwalking.
