The major regional port city of northern Tasmania is Devonport, set on the estuary of the River Mersey, a favourite destination for white-water rafting enthusiasts. The city centre overlooks a pretty harbour set in a long, shallow bay, with outlying beaches great for swimming and relaxing. The commercial port is also the arrivals point for the three daily ferries from Melbourne, with Devonport hotels good for a stopover before heading out to explore the beauties of Tasmania. The city is crammed with visitor attractions, including the Maritime Museum and Heritage Centre, the Regional Art Gallery and the Railway Museum, with its huge collection of vintage engines and coaches.
