Introduction to Coonabarabran, Australia

Located in the middle of the Australian state of New South Wales, Coonabarabran may be a few hundred miles from the sea - and indeed most other places - but there is still plenty of reason to come here. The old Coonabarabran Court House is a charming building with a pink façade while the War Memorial is another distinctive structure that adds to the town's character and sense of history. The local Kamilaroi people, still represented here, have occupied the town for about 7,500 years. The town is the main gateway to Warrumbungle National Park, a spectacular and desolate place that is home to the mountains of the same name that make iconic rock formations. Within the town centre, there are plenty of activities on offer, including a lawn bowling club, a jockey club, a dog track and an art gallery. Coonabarabran hotels are numerous along the main strip, Oxley Highway, right in the centre of the action.
