Introduction to Cooma, Australia
Situated in the very south of New South Wales, about 50 miles inland, Cooma has developed as a tourist destination and transit point for travellers heading to the snow fields from the coast during winter. But the town has plenty to offer besides a bed for the night for those passing through. Cooma Courthouse is a magnificent old building surrounded by attractive grounds and offers a glimpse into the town's past, while the Aviation Pioneers' Memorial is an unlikely structure housing parts retrieved from a 1931 crash in the Toolong Range, which took 27 years to recover after the crash. There is also a heritage railway here using motors constructed back in the 1920s and a modern airport with connections to Sydney just a 15-minute drive away. Cooma hotels have sprung up in increasing numbers in recent years, with almost all clustered around the main Sharp Street which flows into Monaro Highway.
