Introduction to Cooktown, Australia
Cooktown is situated in North Queensland, and is an ideal destination for tourists looking for a relaxed place to stay which is close to the sea, yet has plenty to do and see during the evening. Most Cooktown hotels are situated along Charlotte Street, which runs through the town centre and features restaurants, shops and bars. The town is well-known for its annual Discovery Festival, held each June to celebrate the landing of Captain James Cook in 1770 when the crippled Endeavour came to shore. Other attractions and sights include Grassy Hill, the James Cook Museum and an ancient Chinese well. In the 1870s the town benefited from a gold rush, with gold discovered nearby and attracting Chinese labourers. It was around this time the town’s Botanic Garden was established, and today the garden continues to be a favourite spot with visiting botanists. Many visitors use the town as a base for visiting the Great Barrier Reef.
