Introduction to Cooktown - Black Mountain
Renowned for its extraordinarily large granite boulders, Black Mountain National Park is an interesting destination situated 25kms from Cooktown.

While the park is an easy daytrip from Cooktown, many guests prefer to stay in one of the Black Mountain hotels and enjoy an extended visit.

This accommodation is useful since camping is not allowed in the park.

There are no walking trails or picnic facilities, but a viewing platform tells the story of the park's ecological and cultural history through a series of interpretive displays.

Black Mountain has mythological significance for both the indigenous people and colonial European settlers.

Aboriginal history notes four places of religious significance, while early European settlers found that large numbers of people and animals 'disappeared' while exploring this area of chasms and rocks.

Activities in the region include the Cooktown River cruise, which offers excellent opportunities to spot saltwater crocodiles.

Most travellers get here by flying to Cairns International Airport and completing the three-hour drive by hire car.
