Introduction to Clare, Australia
In South Australia, north of the state's capital of Adelaide, Clare is a small, touristy town famous for its excellent wine. It lends its name to the Clare Valley vineyard region, one of the oldest in the country. Famous for its Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon wines, the area features some excellent places to stop and taste the local tipple, with a designated driver strongly advised given there are about 40 wineries here. For those feeling up to it, a 20-mile Riesling Trail takes in the different wineries between Clare and neighbouring Auburn. There is also a golf course right in the centre of the town and a little further out, Spring Gully Conservation Park makes for an excellent spot for walking. Given the town's popularity, there are a number of Clare hotels with a healthy range in standard and price, including motels and bed and breakfasts, most of which can be found on Main North Road.
