Just over 100 miles north of Perth, in Western Australia, Cervantes is a small town on the coast that is named after a ship that was wrecked close to the shore here.

The main attraction here is Nambung National Park, close by with its striking pinnacles, natural rock formations jutting out of the desolate sand and rock that make up this increasingly popular attraction.

Another unusual feature of the nearby landscape here is to be found at the salty Lake Thetis with its stromatolites, still not-fully-understood phenomena of circular formations made by algae and bacteria.

These formations just outside of Cervantes are extremely rare as they are still alive while most date back thousands of years.

New walkways around the lake offer excellent views of this peculiar sight.

There is also a golf course on the edge of town and a number of attractive parks.
