Introduction to Carnarvon, Australia
An old port settlement and fishing town turned popular tourism destination, Carnarvon lies in Western Australia, on the Indian Ocean estuary of the Gascoyne River. To the north is Ningaloo Reef, and the Shark Bay World Heritage area begins just south of the town. Founded in 1883, the settlement is central for the region’s agricultural activities and its main attraction for visitors staying in Carnarvon hotels is magnificent Shark Bay, just a short drive away. Granted World Heritage status in the 1990s, Shark Bay covers a massive area of 10,000 square kilometres at an average 10m depth, with many offshore islands, peninsulas and shallow sandbanks. Divided into two sections, its coastline runs for 1,500kms, 300kms of which are overlooked by jagged limestone cliffs. The bay itself is set between three climactic regions and two major eco-systems. Two offshore islands, Dorre and Bernier, are home to severely endangered Australian mammals and are free of predatory species, allowing the release of hand-reared animals into a safe haven. The diverse marine species in the bay make it an area of zoological importance. other spellings: carnarvonhotels, otelin carmarvon, carnarvno hote, carnarovn hotes, carnavron hotle
