Introduction to Canberra - Belconnen
The community of Belconnen may be a district of Canberra, but the population of this busy suburb situated northwest of the city centre of Australia's national capital exceeds that of many independent Australian cities. Most Belconnen hotels boast scenic and relaxing locations near Lake Ginninderra, an artificial body of water first created to collect storm water discharge in 1974. Today, walking, fishing, sailing, canoeing and swimming are the most frequent activities on this lake. This community's town centre is home to the large Westfield shopping mall as well as several Australian government offices, including the statistics bureau and multicultural affairs. This community is further subdivided into 25 smaller suburbs. One of these suburbs, Bruce, is home to the city stadium, the Australian Institute of Sport and the University of Canberra campus.
