Introduction to Brisbane - West End
The first English residents in the Brisbane neighbourhood of West End are said to have named this suburb after London's West End district. Today, over a third of the area's residents were born outside of Australia, and this eclectic and multicultural neighbourhood lies just across the Brisbane River from central Brisbane. West End's numerous independently owned vintage clothing shops, specialised grocery shops, and unique bookstores form the majority of its tourist attractions. The best places to hear live music in West End are the restaurants and cafes along Boundary Street, most of which feature musical entertainment at night. Many West End hotels and private residences have maintained their traditional tin roofs and other facets of their historic character. Davies Park hosts the popular outdoor markets each Saturday, but Marky Markets, which occur every third Sunday and offer a variety of handmade vintage items, are also attracting increasing numbers of customers. Orleigh Park hugs the Brisbane River in the southeasternmost part of the district.Visit our Brisbane Travel Guide
