Introduction to Ayers Rock, Australia
Ayers Rock, in the middle of Australia, is the country's iconic natural attraction.

Any trip through the inland areas of central Australia will usually entail a stop at this massive sandstone monolith that stands 350m above the surrounding desert terrain.

The rock, also known as Uluru, sits in a national park in the southeast corner of the Northern Territory.

The nearest town of any size is Alice Springs, which is 500kms away by road.

Using Ayers Rock hotels as a base provides travellers with the opportunity to avoid the sizzling midday heat and climb the monolith early in the morning, though the Anangu discourage visitors from climbing this sandstone rock which is considered sacred by them.

Most of the accommodation options are close to Lassetser Highway-Route 4.

There also campsites and backpacker hostels for people travelling overland.

Traditional pubs and eateries are nearby.

As well as the steep walk up Ayers Rock, there is a less arduous, but longer, trek that circumnavigates the base.

Most visitors to this remote district also travel to the inimitable domed rocks at Kata Tjuta, 25kms away.
