Introduction to Augusta, Australia
South of the Western Australian city of Perth are a number of tiny villages first established along the stunning coastline some 200 years ago. A pretty example close by towering Cape Leeuwin is Augusta, with its 1,000 inhabitants and interesting history of initial discovery by Dutch mariners in 1622. The settlement itself was founded in 1830 by the Molloy, Bussell and Turner families close to the Blackwood River estuary. Timber was the main industry, well established by the 1880s. During the 20th century, the village became a popular local seaside summer holiday destination. Nowadays it’s an equally-popular retirement hub for its cool climate. It’s a peaceful town, with close by Flinders Bay famous in summer for its whale, dolphin and seal watching via charter boats. Sunrise and sunset on the Cape are a dream for photographers and surfing, sailing, fishing, wreck and underwater cave diving, and windsurfing draw many visitors to Augusta hotels in summer.
