Introduction to Adelaide, Australia
Adelaide, the biggest city in the state of South Australia, is sited on the coast of the Gulf St Vincent, 1,200kms east of Sydney. As well as being a vibrant city, it offers travellers a convenient base for reaching wine regions such as the Barossa Valley and the fabulous beaches on the Gulf St Vincent. The central part of the city is a few kilometres inland and laid out in a grid surrounded by parks. The Victoria Park Racecourse is in the southeast corner. In the central area, there are numerous Adelaide hotels and backpacker establishments. The Central Market and Rundle Mall are two of the most popular shopping venues in town, with the latter containing arcades, cafes and specialist shops. The Victorian-era Ayers House Museum on North Terrace houses rotating exhibitions, period costumes and artworks. Gouger Street heads west from the centre and is at the heart of a burgeoning precinct packed with pubs and cocktail bars. For beach action, head for Glenelg, a historic beach suburb connected by tram to the city centre.Visit our Adelaide Travel Guide
