Maldives Travel Guide

Introduction

Overview & Introduction to Maldives
The Maldives was once an active port as it lay on the ancient sea trade routes. As a result of its strategic location and its natural resources it was under constant attack from the Portuguese and the Malabar pirates. After numerous attacks, the Portuguese did defeat the Maldivians and govern the island but a strong resistance movement forced them to flee.
In 1887 the Maldives signed a treaty and became a British protectorate and a movement for independence soon began. The Maldives gained its Independence in 1965 and three years later it abolished monarchy rule, became a republic and officially changed its name to the Republic of Maldives.
Even during the Hulhangu monsoon season there are good diving experiences to be enjoyed as the conditions of the waters at this time attract different species of marine life. The tourist season generally stretches from February to April.
Once visitors are on their secluded island resorts, a whole host of activities can be enjoyed. The preferred activities generally involve water and there’s plenty to choose from with diving being the favourite.
The tsunami of 2004 hit the Maldives and though its lack of land mass reduced the impact of the waves, much of the low lying archipelago was affected. The vast majority of damaged resorts have now been repaired and are fully operational again.
Tourism has yet to reach the pre-tsunami numbers but is definitely increasing as the beautiful islands still offer some of the world’s most stunning beaches and spectacular diving sites.
