Visitors can island hop between these islands on day excursions as some of them offer quite different leisure activities. With the exception of Kaafu Atoll where Male is located, two of the more popular atolls to visit are:
Raa Atoll (North Maalhosmadulu Atoll): is situated to the north of the Maldives archipelago with more than 90 islands but only 16 are inhabited. The formation of the atoll with its channels provides perfect conditions for exciting diving. There are quite a few things to do here other than water sports, including island hopping within the atoll and visiting the fishing village on the island of Ugaoofaaru.
Baa Atoll (South Maalhosmadulu Atoll): although this atoll consists of 50 islands, only 10 are inhabited: five are tourist resorts and five are inhabited by the locals. The rest lie deserted and are used as ‘excursion’ islands by tourists.
Baa Atoll is famed for its diving sites that attract large number of mantas and whale sharks, especially from May to July. This atoll is known for its lacquer ware and wraparound skirts. There are several resorts located on Baa Atoll.
