Eating and drinking: there is a limited choice of eateries in the Maldives as many of the resorts are located on secluded atolls. However, each resort usually has more than one restaurant offering a varied menu! Male has a small number of restaurants and cafes but these are almost always crowded.
Don’t be surprised if someone joins you at your table if there is a vacant seat. Tasty local fare is served at these food outlets and washed down with a glass of hot sweet tea.
Wooden containers and vases in sorts of shapes, colours and with different designs are sold in many shops in Male. Delicate gold jewellery and the finest silverware from Dhaalu Atool is a favourite with tourists. Visitors should not purchase items made from coral, mother-of-pearl, black coral, seashell and turtle-shell as they are not allowed to be taken out of the Maldives.
Cultural events: all the atolls have traditional music and dances when there are festivals like Eid Ul Haa, Kuda Eid and celebrations like National Day and Independence Day. Some hotels organize cultural shows on the beach at night. A must at these shows is the Boda Beru performance that consists of drums, percussion instruments, singing and dancing to exciting and fast drum beats.
Spas: if you are tired of the sun and the surf, give yourself a treat by visiting a spa. Most of the hotels at this luxury destination have very stylish spas that provide a number of relaxing and pampering treatments that are guaranteed to relax and rejuvenate.
