The Republic of the Maldives, located in the Indian Ocean, lies across the equator, which means it experiences two monsoon seasons each year. The northeast monsoon, Iruvai, starts in November and tapers off by the middle of April. What’s unique about the Maldives is that most of the resorts are built each on its own island and generally there are few shops, fewer restaurants and not much night life. Resorts will often organise beach discos and occasionally a live band will perform.
