Siem Reap Travel Guide - Introduction
Siem Reap lies north of the western area of Tonle Sap Lake and offers a diverse experience for visitors. The small laid back town, with paved main streets and muddy roads everywhere else, is a blend of interesting buildings and people. Top class restaurants, old French houses, five-star hotels, markets and street vendors clutter the street creating a lively yet fascinating mix of buildings.
The main reason visitors come to Siem Reap is to view the ancient temples at Angkor. There are over 200 square kilometres of area to be explored so to fully appreciate all of the ruins can take days. There are at least 40 accessible temples and many more which are closed to the public, but can be viewed from outside. It is also believed that there are temples that have yet to be discovered as they lie hidden in the thick jungles surrounding Angkor.
Although the town is laid back, there are a number of active outdoor activities that can be enjoyed here, most of which are connected in some manner to the famed Angkor Wat. Visitors can enjoy rides on elephants, in hot air balloons or even in a helicopter. In the evening, after a day spent exploring, a visit to Bar Street will certainly quench your thirst.
It is possible to enjoy Siem Reap throughout the year as it enjoys a tropical climate. From December to February, it is generally cool and fairly dry but by March the heat has increased and it can get very hot with temperatures reaching as high as 35°C. It rains between June and August but the weather is still hot and it gets very humid.
A trip to Siem Reap complete with its friendly locals, rich history and culture, unique shopping and outdoor activities and the eclectic blend of old and new, will be something to be remembered and talked about for many years.
