Phnom Penh Travel Guide - Introduction
Today, the city is a popular tourist destination, with an abundance of cultural heritage and interesting colonial architecture. With the troubles of the past laid to rest, the city is beginning to improve its infrastructure.
There is plenty to see and do in Phnom Penh, with some interesting museums focusing on the country's history and a growing number of art galleries. There are some beautiful temples here, as well as the famous silver pagoda with 5,000 silver tiles and the golden Buddha complete with 9,000 diamonds.
Phnom Penh has a good range of markets, with the central market the most worthy of a visit as there are plenty of bargains to be found among its hundreds of stalls. The area along Sisowath Quay, by the river, is a pleasant place to visit by day or night with some excellent bars and restaurants. The Foreign Correspondents' Club is an especially popular place to enjoy an evening drink.
The city is served by an international airport with routes to all significant destinations in Asia, although the highest number of visitors fly in from Bangkok. There are also bus connections from Phnom Penh to destinations all over the country, as well as daily buses to Ho Chi Minh City.
