Phnom Penh Travel Guide - Day Trips

Udong: prior to 1866, when power shifted permanently to Phnom Penh, Udong served as the Khmer Capital and several Kings ruled from here for more than 200 years. Whilst not comparable to Angkor, it is still an interesting place to visit and there are some stunning views from the hills. Udong is the final resting place of a number of Kings and there is also a small memorial here to some of the victims of Pol Pot’s regime. It is generally a very quiet, tranquil place, with a few picnickers on weekends. Udong is situated just 25 miles from Phnom Penh and can be easily reached by bus or taxi.
Tonle Bati: again, for anyone who has been to Angkor the temples here might not be so impressive, but it’s a pleasant area and the drive through the rural villages is interesting. Tonle Bati is just over 20 miles from Phnom Penh and is an attractive lake. The temple, Ta Prohm, was built in the 12th century by King Jayavarman.
