January Festivals
Liberation Day: is observed annually on 7 January and is a chance for the Cambodian people to acknowledge the day on which they were officially freed from the oppressiveness of the murderous Pol Pot regime.
February Festivals
Tet festival: depending on the lunar cycle, this festival can be celebrated in either January or February and is considered the lunar calendar's New Year for both China and Vietnam. Cambodians with Vietnamese ancestry or residing close to the border celebrate this event with a variety of festivities including fireworks and live music.
April Festivals
Cambodian New Year: is the festival observed to mark the turn of the year in the official Khmer lunar calendar. For three days, Cambodians decorate their homes, offerings are made at temples and traditional games and festivities are practiced.
May Festivals
Visaka Bochea day: is considered the official birthday of Buddha and is observed with due reverence with trips to the temple and offerings being made.
Royal ploughing ceremony: is a festival held to mark the onset of the rainy season and the period during which farmers engage in the ploughing of the fields. The festival is based around traditional ploughing ceremonies involving cattle and predictions made for the coming harvest based on the food they choose to eat.
September Festivals
Bonn Pchum Ben: is the festival held in commemoration of the spirits of the deceased. Religious offerings are made at temples across the country.
October Festivals
King Norodom Sihanouk's birthday: three days (Oct 30th - Nov 1st) are dedicated to celebrating the birthday of Cambodia's king with celebrations across the country and particular enthusiasm shown in the capital Phnom Penh where large firework displays are held.
December Festivals
International half marathon: runners from around the world converge at Angkor Wat in Siem Reap to take part in this 13 mile race that draws literally thousands of spectators. With the magnificent temples of Angkor as the backdrop, the race is something of a fascinating sight to behold.
