Introduction to Sihanoukville - Independence Beach
The primary beach town in the Southeast Asian country of Cambodia, Sihanoukville, has a colourful array of beaches of varying types to choose from for a holiday. One top choice here is Independence Beach, which is named for Independence Hotel that squats on a rocky outcrop at the north end of the beach. Locals call the beach otel pram-pul chann, or seven-storey hotel, as the Independence Hotel has seven floors. The beach stretches for more than a kilometre. Some of it is swallowed by the Gulf of Thailand during high tide, so it is better for walking along and appreciating while the tide is out. There are drink and snack vendors on hand. There's also a lovely half-kilometre strip of beach and a grassy park at the north end of the beach. Nearby is a freshwater lake. Just look out for the crafty monkeys, who beg for and steal food.
