Introduction to Siem Reap - Riverside
Cambodia's glorious, enormous Tonle Sap translates often as 'large freshwater river' or more commonly as the 'great lake'. One particularly scenic and lively stretch of waterside is in the northeastern community of Siem Reap, which is the gateway to the country's biggest attraction, the Angkor temple complex. Siem Reap Riverside hotels dot the shoreline to the south of the town and nestle in among the local dwellings, which are built in the classical regional style atop wooden stilts, right on the water. The peaceful, brown water is fun to watch from the privacy of your own hotel room, for the affects of sunlight playing on its surface as well as for all the river traffic of varying boats coming and going. Like elsewhere in Siem Reap, the town's lakeshore has developed much after peace returned to the kingdom in the late 1990s.
